NIT Silchar Students Drown in Assam Waterfall Tragedy

Three students from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar, drowned Saturday in a waterfall in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. Authorities confirmed the fatalities on Sunday, identifying the victims as students on an outing.

The incident occurred at the Bulchol (Hmunthajao) waterfall, situated in Bolsom Bagan of Harangajao. Emergency services initiated a rescue operation following reports of the mishap. The remote location and challenging terrain complicated efforts.

Victims Identified

The deceased were identified as Sauhard Rai, 20, and Sarbavartika Singh, 20, both from Uttar Pradesh. Radhika, 19, from Bihar, was also among the victims. All three were pursuing studies at NIT Silchar.

Rescue Challenges and Recovery

Rescue operations faced immediate hurdles, according to a senior official from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). The area around Bulchol waterfall suffers from poor mobile phone connectivity. This significantly hampered real-time communication and coordination among rescue teams. The geographical inaccessibility of the site further slowed the response time and deployment of resources.

DDMA teams, along with local police, arrived at the scene to commence search and recovery efforts. A medical team was also on standby. Despite the swift mobilization, all three students were eventually retrieved from the water. Medical personnel at the site pronounced them dead.

Official Condolences and Safety Warnings

Dima Hasao district authorities expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of young lives. In response to the incident, officials issued a strong public safety advisory. The advisory urges individuals to exercise extreme caution when visiting natural water bodies and tourist spots.

The warning specifically highlighted the risks prevalent during the post-monsoon season. During this period, water currents in waterfalls and rivers often become unpredictable and dangerous. Increased water flow, strong undercurrents, and slippery surfaces pose significant hazards to visitors. Authorities recommend avoiding entry into water bodies if conditions appear unsafe or if warning signs are present.

Context and Preventative Measures

Dima Hasao district, known for its natural beauty, attracts numerous tourists to its hills and waterfalls. However, the rugged terrain means many popular spots lack comprehensive safety infrastructure. Visitors frequently explore remote areas, sometimes without local knowledge or adequate preparation. This situation underscores the need for greater awareness regarding natural hazards.

To prevent similar tragedies, authorities advise adherence to several safety protocols:

  • Check Weather Conditions: Always review local weather forecasts and water level advisories before planning visits to natural water sites.
  • Observe Safety Signage: Comply with all posted warnings, restrictions, and instructions from local park rangers or authorities.
  • Avoid Unsupervised Areas: Prioritize visiting established tourist locations that have designated safety measures and supervision.
  • Travel in Groups: Avoid solitary excursions to isolated natural attractions, ensuring companions are aware of your location.
  • Ensure Preparedness: Carry essential items like a first-aid kit, emergency contact information, and ensure communication devices are functional where signal allows.
  • Wear Appropriate Gear: Use sturdy, non-slip footwear suitable for uneven, wet, and slippery terrain commonly found near waterfalls.

NIT Silchar has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident. The institution is expected to offer condolences and support to the affected families. Local police have registered a case and initiated an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the drownings.
