Indian Institute of Astrophysics Hosts Students at VBO for IISF 2026

KAVALUR, TIRUVANNAMALAI DISTRICT — The Vainu Bappu Observatory (VBO) in Kavalur recently hosted nearly 500 government school students. Fifty teachers also attended the educational program. The event served as a preparatory activity for the International Science Festival (IISF) 2026. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) operates the VBO.

Event Details and Participation

The visit occurred on Monday. Students and teachers traveled from approximately 190 different government schools. All participating institutions are located within the Tiruvannamalai district. This outreach formed part of the Samagra Shiksha’s RAA – Exposure Visit 2025-26 initiative. The IIA confirmed these event details through an official press release.

Student Learning Experience

Professor Annapurni Subramaniam, Director of IIA, commented on the program’s objectives. She stated that the event exposed 500 students to astronomy. IIA staff presented scientific concepts in an accessible format. Students directly observed the 2.3-meter Vainu Bappu Telescope. They learned about its historical context. Staff explained its significant role in Indian astronomy. This telescope has contributed to numerous discoveries.

The program also incorporated video presentations. These videos highlighted key achievements of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. One presentation focused on the Indian Astronomical Observatory at Hanle. It detailed the observatory’s unique environment for skygazing. Efforts to preserve dark skies in the region were also discussed. This preservation is crucial for observational astronomy. The videos also covered initiatives in astro-tourism. These programs aim to engage the public with astronomical observations.

Another segment featured the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory. This facility holds a distinguished place in Indian scientific history. The observatory has operated for 125 years. It provides continuous data on solar activities. Its long operational history makes it a vital resource for solar research. The presentations aimed to broaden students’ understanding of various astronomical fields and research efforts.

International Science Festival 2026

The Kavalur observatory visit is a direct lead-up to the International Science Festival (IISF) 2026. The festival will take place in Panchkula, Haryana. Its scheduled dates are December 6 to 9 . IISF aims to celebrate advancements in science. It also seeks to promote growth driven by scientific innovation. The festival intends to foster the spirit of scientific inquiry across the nation. Preparatory activities like the VBO visit introduce students to scientific institutions and research firsthand. This early exposure encourages future engagement in STEM fields. It aligns with the festival’s broader goals of cultivating scientific literacy and interest among young adults.
