Delhi University: BR Ambedkar Teachers Strike Over Faculty Assault

Teachers at Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, Delhi University, will observe a two-day strike and dharna on October 30 and 31, 2025 . The protest will take place daily from 10 am to 2 pm. The college’s Staff Association formally approved this action during its General Body Meeting (GBM) on October 29, 2025 . The strike is a direct response to an alleged assault on faculty members that occurred on October 16, 2025 , within the college premises.

Alleged Assault on Faculty

The primary catalyst for the strike is an incident reported on October 16, 2025 . During this event, Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) office bearers, including Joint Secretary Deepika Jha, allegedly assaulted college faculty members. The incident reportedly took place inside the Principal’s office. Police personnel were present during the confrontation. Professor Sujit Kumar is identified as one of the faculty members allegedly targeted.

This alleged attack has drawn widespread condemnation from various teacher organizations across Delhi University. These groups characterize the incident as a severe assault on the dignity of teachers and a threat to the academic environment within the university. They have also strongly criticized the lack of immediate disciplinary action against the DUSU office bearers accused in the incident.

Demands for Justice and Accountability

Following the October 16 incident, several prominent teacher organizations within Delhi University collectively urged the Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) to convene an emergency General Body Meeting. This meeting was intended to address and discuss the alleged assault on Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College faculty. The organizations pressing for this action included the CTF, DTF, DTI, INTEC (I), RSM, and SSM. Their unified stance underscored the perceived failure to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the alleged culprits.

The Staff Association of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar College has now formalized a set of demands seeking swift resolution and justice:

  • An immediate copy of the First Information Report (FIR) must be provided to Professor Sujit Kumar, enabling legal recourse.
  • The fact-finding committee, established by the Governing Body, is urged to thoroughly investigate and obtain comprehensive details regarding all incidents that transpired on both October 15 and 16, 2025 .
  • The DUTA Executive must convene a meeting without delay to address these critical issues and formulate a unified response.

Concerns and demands previously articulated during the Association’s meeting on October 22, 2025 , remain integral to the current list of unresolved issues. The faculty demands prompt and decisive measures to ensure a safe and respectful academic environment.

Strike Coordination and Future Strategy

To ensure the effective execution and coordination of the two-day dharna and broader action plan, the Staff Association has designated a dedicated coordination team. This team comprises Chitra Rani, RP Dwivedi, Sangeeta Dhaor, Rajesh Upadhyay, Atul Pratap Singh, Aarti Dhingra, Ravindra Singh, and Malini Priya. These members will oversee the logistics and ensure the smooth conduct of the protest.

The Staff Association is scheduled to hold another General Body Meeting on the upcoming Monday. This meeting will serve to review the ongoing action plan, assess the impact of the strike, and strategize for future steps. DUTA activists and members from staff associations of other Delhi University colleges have been explicitly invited to participate and lend support to the protest program. Additionally, Staff Council meeting attendance is confirmed for October 31, 2025 , where the issues may also be discussed.
