The Bar Council of India (BCI) has extended the registration deadline for the All India Bar Examination XX (AIBE 20) to October 31 . This extension follows reports of technical difficulties and protests from student groups regarding eligibility rules.
Initially set for October 28 , the deadline moved three days later. Law graduates from BCI-recognised universities or approved colleges are eligible to apply. The AIBE 20 exam is scheduled for November 30 .
Deadline Extension Details
The BCI extended the registration period after receiving multiple complaints from applicants. Students reported persistent technical problems prevented them from completing the online application process. One student, Rashi Agarwal, stated on X, “I have been trying since last 24 hours to fill the AIBE form. Website is not working. Not able to fill the grievance form. Help Desk is not helping. Not even picking calls.”
NLUSA Protests Eligibility Rules
The National Law Universities Students’ Association (NLUSA) also urged the BCI to broaden the eligibility criteria. NLUSA advocated for the inclusion of all final-year law students. The association highlighted confusion among applicants from institutions following a trimester system instead of the standard semester system.
Students explained that the 14th trimester of a five-year LLB and the 8th trimester of a three-year LLB are often considered the second-last semester. This happens even though these students are in their final academic year. Some colleges have conducted ninth-semester exams, but results will arrive after the BCI’s initial deadline, creating further eligibility issues.
AIBE 20 Eligibility Criteria
As per the AIBE 20 eligibility criteria, applicants must meet specific requirements:
- Graduation from a BCI-recognised university or college.
- Enrollment in a three-year or five-year LLB program.
- Must be in their final year or final semester of the program.
- Must not have any backlogs in previous academic periods.
