About This Scholarship

The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, invites applications for the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) 2020. This prestigious fellowship aims to promote technical research and attract meritorious students to pursue doctoral programmes at leading Indian institutions.

Selected students will gain admission to PhD programmes at IISc/IISERs/IITs and Central Universities. The fellowship offers a substantial monthly stipend, starting at INR 70,000 per month for the first two years. This increases to INR 75,000 in the third year, and INR 80,000 per month in the fourth and fifth years.

Additionally, each fellow receives a research grant of INR 2 Lakh per year for up to five years. This grant covers academic contingency expenses and foreign/national travel costs. The fellowship tenure is four years for students from integrated courses and five years for B.Tech (or equivalent) students. For those selected through the lateral entry channel, the PMRF scholarship and obligations continue only for the remainder of their doctoral programme, with no retrospective payments.

Applications for this fellowship are accepted throughout the year.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship, an applicant must apply for a PhD programme at one of the PMRF granting institutes through either the direct entry channel or the lateral entry channel.

For Direct Entry Channel

Applicants must satisfy one of the following criteria:

• Have completed or be pursuing the final year of a 4• (or 5-) year undergraduate, 5-year integrated M.Tech, 5-year integrated M.Sc., 2-year M.Sc., or 5-year undergraduate-postgraduate dual degree program in Science and Technology streams from IISc/IITs/NITs/IISERs/IIEST and centrally funded universities with a CGPA/CPI of at least 8.0 (on a 10-point scale) or equivalent.
• Have completed or be pursuing the final year of a 4• (or 5-) year undergraduate, 5-year integrated M.Tech, 5-year integrated M.Sc., 2-year M.Sc., or 5-year undergraduate-postgraduate dual degree program in Science and Technology streams from any other (not covered in the first point) Institute/University recognized in India with a CGPA/CPI of at least 8.0 (on a 10-point scale) or equivalent, apart from a minimum score of 650 in the respective GATE subject.
• Have qualified GATE and be pursuing or have completed M.Tech./MS by Research at one of PMRF granting institutions, having a minimum CGPA or CPI of 8.0 (on a 10-point scale) at the end of the first semester with a minimum of four courses.

For Lateral Entry Channel

Applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria:

• Be pursuing PhD in one of the PMRF granting institutions.
• Have completed at most 12 months in the PhD programme (if they joined the programme with a Master's degree), OR have completed at most 24 months in the PhD programme (if they joined the programme with a Bachelor's degree).
• Have completed at least four courses in the PhD programme, each of which should be a full-semester course.
• Have obtained an aggregate CGPA of 8.5 (out of 10) or higher.

Required Documents

The following documents are required for the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship application:

• Passport size photograph of the applicant.
• Project abstract of maximum 1,000 words in PDF file format.
• References.
• Scanned copy of mark sheets/grade sheets/transcripts.
• Scanned copy of GATE qualifying certificate.
• Curriculum Vitae (CV) in not more than 2 A4 size pages and in PDF format.

How to Apply

Eligible candidates must first apply for a PhD programme at one of the PMRF granting institutions. Following successful admission to a PhD program, the respective institution will make a recommendation for the fellowship.

The selection of candidates for the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship is made based on specific metrics tailored for each entry type, ensuring that only highly deserving applicants are awarded the fellowship.
