About This Scholarship
Abel Visiting Scholarship 2025 is an opportunity offered by the Commission for Developing Countries (CDC) of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and fully funded by the Abel Prize in Mathematics. This scholarship program is designed for post-doctoral mathematicians in the early stages of their careers. It provides funding for one-month research visits as collaborators at international institutions, with extensions available based on requirements.
Selected candidates will receive a grant of up to $5,000 per month, which can be utilized for various expenses during their research visit. The grant specifically covers:
• Travel Costs: Economy-class airfare from the applicant's place of work to the host institution, along with public transportation (rail or bus) between the nearest airport city and the applicant's home or host institution. A maximum of four taxi fares (with receipts) are allowed for airport/station transfers.
• Pre-Departure/Arrival Accommodation: A maximum of one night's hotel stay before departure or upon arrival can be reimbursed, if necessary.
• Visa Fees: Costs associated with obtaining a visa for the host country.
• Travel Insurance: Expenses for travel insurance.
• Living Costs: A daily allowance for basic living expenses, including public transportation, in the host country. The specific amount is based on the cost of living in the visiting city. If accommodation includes meals, the daily allowance will be adjusted accordingly.
• Accommodation Costs: Hotel accommodation is permitted for a maximum of four weeks, only if the host institution confirms the unavailability of guest housing or rented apartments. For stays exceeding four weeks, the applicant must secure a suitable apartment or guesthouse. (Note: Cash payments for accommodation are not accepted; payments must be made through trackable transfer methods.)
The grant is paid in two installments:
• The first payment covers accommodation in the host country, travel insurance, visa fees, airport transportation, and 50% of the living costs. This payment is made before departure.
• The second payment covers the remaining living costs. To receive this payment, a detailed report, photographs, and all original invoices must be submitted to the IMU Secretariat.
Important Notes:
• The grant does not cover any costs for additional trips, such as attending conferences or workshops. These expenses must be borne by the grantee or the host institution.
• Living and accommodation costs will not be covered for personal or non-research-related stays abroad.
• A comprehensive overview of expenses, excluding living costs, must be listed in the financial report. This report should be accompanied by copies of original invoices and boarding passes.
• The financial and activity report, along with photographs and all invoices, must be submitted to the IMU Secretariat, CDC Administration, within two weeks of the research visit's conclusion.
• Any unspent funds must be returned to CDC/Abel Funds.
The application deadlines for this scholarship are:
• April 30, 2025, for visits between September 1 and December 31, 2025.
• August 31, 2025, for visits between January 1 and April 30, 2026.
Selection is based on the quality of the project and its potential benefits/added value for the applicant's home institution/country. A selection committee, comprising a chairperson appointed by the IMU Executive Committee (EC), a member from the CDC, and another member from the IMU EC, evaluates all applications. Members 2 and 3 serve three-year terms, with a maximum of two terms each, while the IMU EC determines the duration of member 1's term.
