Context of Teacher Recruitment Issues

This current distribution of appointment letters is a direct result of the Supreme Court’s order in the landmark case Baisakhi Bhattacharya (Chattopadhyay) vs State of West Bengal and others. This judicial intervention became necessary following allegations of widespread irregularities in teacher recruitment processes in West Bengal. The Supreme Court had previously issued an order to cancel approximately 26,000 teaching and non-teaching jobs. These cancellations impacted positions awarded under the 2016 selection process due to anomalies found in recruitment procedures. The present 182 appointments represent a step towards resolving these past issues and ensuring transparency and fairness in teacher selections within the state.

The verification of candidates’ testimonials and qualifications was a critical step mandated by the court. This thorough check ensures that only eligible and correctly selected candidates receive their positions, restoring public trust in the recruitment system.

Required Documents for Appointment Letter Collection

To ensure a smooth collection process, selected candidates must bring a complete set of original documents on their allotted date. These documents are essential for final verification and to confirm eligibility before receiving the appointment letter.

  • Original recommendation letter issued by the WBCSSC.
  • Approval letter from the concerned District Inspector of Schools (DI(S)), specifically for the 2016 selection process.
  • Any prior appointment letter issued by the concerned school authority, if the candidate participated in a selection process before 2016.
  • Approval letter from the DI(S) related to any selection process conducted prior to 2016.
  • A valid proof of date of birth, such as a birth certificate or the admit card of the Madhyamik Pariksha (Class 10 examination) or an equivalent document.
  • One official proof of identity, including an electoral ID card, Aadhaar card, PAN card, or a driving license.
  • A marriage certificate from a competent authority for female candidates, if applicable.
  • Two recent coloured passport-size photographs for record-keeping.

Upcoming Teacher Recruitment Opportunities

Beyond these current appointments, the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has announced significant plans for future teacher recruitment. The commission intends to fill a large number of new teaching posts, with a target of 35,726 vacancies for the year 2025. This major recruitment drive includes a mandated 17% quota specifically reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBC). These efforts underscore the state’s commitment to strengthening its educational sector and providing employment opportunities for qualified individuals across West Bengal.
