UP NEET PG Round 3 Counselling Resumes Jan 23; Seat Allotment Feb 9

LUCKNOW — The Uttar Pradesh NEET PG Round 3 counselling process will resume on January 23, 2025 . Authorities will declare seat allotment results on February 9 . The Director General Medical Education and Training, Uttar Pradesh, issued the updated schedule. This revised timeline follows a significant postponement of the state’s admission process. The delay stemmed from changes in the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) All India Quota (AIQ) counselling schedule.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) recently released its revised AIQ and state counselling calendar. The MCC’s national counselling process faced a prolonged delay. This halt occurred due to the approval of new medical colleges and the addition of seats across various institutions nationwide. These national-level adjustments directly impacted state-level counselling timelines, including Uttar Pradesh’s postgraduate medical admissions.

NEET PG Cut-Off Slashed: Merit Concerns Raised

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare approved a substantial reduction in the NEET PG cut-off percentile. For candidates in the general category, the revised qualifying cut-off is the 7th percentile . For reserved categories, including Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC), the cut-off has been lowered to the 0 percentile .

This drastic cut-off reduction has ignited widespread concern among medical aspirants, educators, and public health experts. Many critics have publicly termed the decision a “murder of merit,” arguing it compromises the selection standard for future specialist doctors. The NEET PG exam aims to identify highly qualified candidates for specialized medical training. Reducing the minimum eligibility score to zero percentile raises questions about the competency levels of incoming postgraduates.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court, directly challenging this decision. The PIL argues that lowering eligibility to zero percentile could negatively impact the quality of healthcare and the public’s trust in the medical profession. The court will now consider these concerns regarding the eligibility criteria for admissions into MD and MS courses.

Registration Rules and Fee Reductions

Candidates who have already registered for the UP NEET PG counselling earlier do not need to re-register. Their previous registration remains valid for admission to government and private medical colleges within the state. The state medical counselling committee affirmed that only candidates who meet the established eligibility criteria, including the revised cut-offs, will be considered for seat allotment.

In a related development, several private medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh have significantly reduced their postgraduate non-clinical course fees. Some institutions have reportedly cut fees by as much as Rs 50 lakh. This move aims to fill vacant seats in non-clinical specialties, making these courses more accessible and competitive compared to government-fixed rates.
