Tripura has become the first Indian state to equip all its government general degree colleges with WiFi facilities. Chief Minister Manik Saha recently inaugurated the final phase of this project, extending connectivity to 11 additional institutions. This initiative means all 30 government general degree colleges across the state now have campus-wide wireless internet access.
Officials confirmed the completion of the state-wide rollout. This marks a significant milestone in digital education for Tripura. The project aims to provide reliable internet access to thousands of students, faculty, and staff.
Project Implementation and Cost
The WiFi project rolled out in two distinct phases. The initial phase began in October last year . This phase successfully connected 19 colleges. These institutions received a 100 Mbps backbone network. This formed the foundation for the broader connectivity initiative.
The second phase, recently completed, covered the remaining 11 colleges. Each of these colleges now features approximately 20 wireless access points. These access points ensure seamless, campus-wide internet coverage. The total investment for this comprehensive project stands at Rs 12.32 crore . This funding supported the infrastructure development and installation across all 30 colleges.
Enhancing Student Support
Chief Minister Saha also announced an expansion of the Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana (MYYY) . Under this scheme, college students will receive financial assistance. The aid amounts to Rs 5,000 . This money is intended for students to purchase mobile phones. The expansion aims to further support digital learning.
Previously, only final-year students in government general degree colleges qualified for this assistance. The eligibility criteria have now broadened. First-year and second-year students are now also included in the scheme. This wider coverage will boost digital education across more student cohorts. The Chief Minister stated this move helps bridge the digital divide. It also encourages innovation and digital literacy among young adults.
Future Digital Infrastructure
Tripura is also preparing for further digital development. The state government has allocated land to Bharti Airtel. This land is located on the outskirts of Agartala. Bharti Airtel plans to establish a new data centre there. The company will invest Rs 200 crore into this project. This data centre will strengthen the region’s digital infrastructure.
Plans are also underway to extend WiFi facilities beyond general degree colleges. Officials confirmed intentions to equip five polytechnic institutes with similar wireless internet access. This expansion will further broaden digital access in higher education. Finance and IT Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman, and Industries and IT Secretary Kiran Gitte attended the inauguration event, highlighting the project’s importance.
