Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has inaugurated Wifi facilities in 11 government general degree colleges across the state. This initiative ensures all government general degree colleges in Tripura now have internet access. The project aims to integrate technology directly into higher education for students, faculty, and staff.
State-Wide Wifi Rollout
The state’s Wifi integration project is being implemented in distinct phases. This structured rollout ensures broad coverage across educational institutions.
Phase One Completion
The initial phase of the project commenced in October 2024 . This phase successfully connected 19 government colleges with robust internet infrastructure. Each of these institutions was equipped with a 100 Mbps backbone network, providing a foundational level of digital connectivity.
Phase Two Launch and Expansion
The newly inaugurated second phase addresses the remaining 11 colleges. Each of these institutions now features approximately 20 wireless access points. This setup ensures comprehensive internet coverage across college campuses. The expanded network provides consistent internet access for all users.
Chief Minister Saha stated the initiative provides reliable internet access for students, faculty members, and administrative staff. He highlighted the project’s role in bridging digital inequalities. Furthermore, he noted its potential to promote collaboration, innovation, and digital literacy among students. CM Saha reinforced the government’s commitment to merging technology with educational practices, seeing it as a key driver for advancing learning.
Student Financial Assistance for Mobile Phones
The Tripura government also provides financial assistance to college students for purchasing mobile phones. This support is offered under the Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana (MYYY) .
Expanded Eligibility
Eligible students receive a financial grant of Rs. 5000 . This assistance helps them acquire essential digital devices. The eligibility criteria for this scheme have recently expanded. Originally, only final-year students in government general degree colleges were covered. Now, the scheme includes both first and second-year students. This expansion aims to provide broader access to digital tools for a larger student population. The financial aid complements the state’s efforts to enhance digital connectivity and learning opportunities.
Future Plans for Polytechnic Institutes
Plans are also in motion to extend these Wifi facilities to additional educational institutions. The government intends to equip five polytechnic institutes with similar internet access. This expansion signifies a continued commitment to digital infrastructure development across Tripura’s educational sector. Further details regarding this extension will be announced as they become available.
