Tamil Nadu Bans Politics in Private Schools

The Tamil Nadu government has banned political and ideological activities on private school campuses. The School Education Department issued a government order on March 2 amending the Tamil Nadu Private Schools (Regulation) Rules. This rule change aims to keep school grounds neutral academic spaces. Educational facilities will now be used solely for student welfare and learning.

New Rules Detail Prohibitions

Under the amended rules, school buildings, playgrounds, and halls cannot host political, ideological, or communal programs. External individuals or organizations are also prohibited from holding such events on school property. The ban applies to any activity that could promote disharmony based on religion, race, caste, language, or community.

The prohibition covers all times, including school hours, weekends, and holidays. This means schools cannot be used for these events even during vacations or outside regular school schedules.

Permitted Activities and Exceptions

Non-sectarian and non-political events are still allowed. These include blood donation drives, social service programs, and cultural festivals. However, schools need prior permission from the competent authority for these activities. The school’s educational agency must directly supervise such events.

Background of the Policy Change

This policy shift follows a recent controversy. In December 2025 , Sri Saraswathi Vidyalaya, a private school in Cuddalore, allowed Seva Bharati to conduct a camp. The camp took place during the winter holidays.

The School Education Department issued a show-cause notice to the school. The school management challenged this notice in the Madras High Court. They argued that existing rules only banned such activities during school hours. The state’s recent amendment now closes this legal loophole.
