Supreme Court Bans NCERT Textbook Over Judiciary Corruption

The Supreme Court has banned NCERT’s Class 8 Social Science textbook over a chapter discussing alleged corruption in the judiciary. The court ordered the seizure of all physical copies and removal of digital versions. The central and state governments must comply immediately. Failure to do so will result in serious action.

Court Demands Explanation

The Supreme Court issued show cause notices to the NCERT director and the school education secretary. They must explain why action should not be taken against those responsible for the chapter’s content.

Chief Justice Surya Kant stated there appears to be a deliberate attempt to undermine the judiciary. He said such actions can be considered contempt of court. The court indicated a thorough investigation is necessary.

The Chief Justice emphasized the potential erosion of public faith in the judicial system if such issues go unaddressed. He declared that no one will be allowed to escape accountability.

Chief Justice Surya Kant believes a well-planned conspiracy exists to defame the judiciary. He noted the absence of an apology in NCERT’s press release. Instead, the release attempted to justify the content.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta offered an unconditional apology on behalf of the Ministry of Education. The next hearing is scheduled for March 11 .

Textbook to Be Rewritten

NCERT had already halted the distribution of the textbook after the Supreme Court’s criticism. The council plans to rewrite the textbook. This revision will involve consultations with authorities and openness to feedback.

The Supreme Court initiated this case on its own. It took cognizance of sections in the Class 8 book that addressed “corruption in the judiciary.” These sections reportedly covered issues like inadequate infrastructure, a shortage of judges, and complex legal processes.

Chief Justice Surya Kant stated the court cannot permit defamation of the institution. He mentioned that judges across high courts are troubled by the inclusion of this chapter.
