St Xavier’s Kolkata to Launch Nursing School, Medical College

St Xavier’s University Kolkata (SXUK) announced plans to establish a School of Nursing and a medical college. Vice Chancellor Father Felix Raj confirmed the School of Nursing would launch first. The university is actively seeking government land for these new institutions. It also plans to secure necessary healthcare facilities or formalize tie-ups with existing hospitals.

New Healthcare Programs

The proposed School of Nursing and medical college represent a major expansion into healthcare education for SXUK. Father Felix Raj emphasized the critical need for robust healthcare infrastructure to support these programs. He noted that securing government land is a primary step for the project. SXUK had previously requested 10 acres of land from the state government for overall campus expansion two years ago; this earlier land request remains unresolved.

The Vice Chancellor highlighted the dual requirement for these new facilities: either dedicated healthcare infrastructure built by the university or formal partnerships with established hospitals. This approach ensures students will gain practical experience in medical and nursing fields.

Extensive Campus Development

St Xavier’s University has undergone substantial physical and academic transformation since 2017 . The university has invested approximately Rs 550 crore in campus infrastructure projects. This investment supports ongoing modernization and expansion efforts.

A second academic building is nearing completion. This facility will house modern classrooms equipped with advanced technology. It will also feature specialized laboratories for various disciplines. Other key components include an expanded library and a dedicated moot court for law students. These additions aim to enhance the learning environment for all students.

The university is also expanding its event and gathering spaces. A large auditorium is under construction, designed to accommodate approximately 2,000 people. Two smaller auditoriums are also being built, with capacities for 600 and 300 individuals, respectively. These venues will support university events, conferences, and student activities.

Further student amenities are planned. SXUK is considering the construction of two swimming pools. These facilities would promote student engagement in sports and recreation.

Upcoming Academic Programs

SXUK will introduce several new academic programs across different disciplines. A Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) course is scheduled to commence from the academic year 2026 . Following the B.Tech launch, a Master of Technology (M.Tech) course will be introduced. These engineering programs will broaden the university’s technical education portfolio.

Beyond engineering and healthcare, the university will offer additional courses. These include an integrated Master of Business Administration (MBA) and an integrated Bachelor of Education (B.Ed). An entire School of Design is also planned. These diverse offerings align with SXUK’s vision for comprehensive higher education. They also complement the planned School of Nursing and medical college, providing a wide array of educational pathways for students.
