Priyanka Gandhi Alleges NEP, PM SHRI Promote Single Ideology

NEW DELHI – Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday alleged that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme aim to indoctrinate children. She claimed both initiatives were structured to teach students only one ideology, limiting their perspective.

Speaking to reporters, Ms. Gandhi stated that these educational policies contain numerous factual inaccuracies. She further alleged that historical data had been altered. She called the approach unhealthy for education and for children.

Allegations of Ideological Bias

Ms. Gandhi emphasized the importance of a broad perspective in education. She argued that students should be exposed to diverse ideologies. Limiting teaching to a single viewpoint restricts awareness and critical thinking, according to the Congress leader. She reiterated the Congress party’s opposition to these initiatives on these grounds.

Understanding the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020

The National Education Policy 2020 is a comprehensive framework guiding education from pre-school to higher education. The Indian government introduced it to replace the 1986 policy. Its stated goals include universal access, equity, quality, and accountability in education. Key features of NEP 2020 focus on multidisciplinary learning, critical thinking, flexibility in subject choices, and vocational integration. It also emphasizes early childhood care and education, teacher training reforms, and digital learning platforms. The policy aims to align the Indian education system with global standards.

About PM SHRI Schools

The Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme is a centrally sponsored initiative. It aims to upgrade existing schools across India into model institutions. The government plans to convert over 14,500 schools into PM SHRI schools. These schools are intended to showcase the full implementation of NEP 2020. They focus on modern infrastructure, experiential learning, and skill development. PM SHRI schools also promote environmental sustainability through a ‘green schools’ approach.

Kerala’s Stance on PM SHRI

Ms. Gandhi also expressed surprise regarding Kerala’s apparent lack of opposition to the PM SHRI scheme. However, reports indicate the Kerala government has put the implementation of the PM SHRI scheme on hold. The state’s cabinet formed a panel to review the initiative. This decision reflects concerns raised by various state governments regarding the financial implications and academic autonomy related to centrally sponsored schemes.

The Broader Debate on Education Reforms

Education policies often become a subject of political debate. Critics frequently raise concerns about curriculum content and its potential ideological leanings. Proponents of new policies, like NEP and PM SHRI, argue they modernize education and improve learning outcomes. The government maintains that these reforms are crucial for preparing students for the future. They state the policies promote holistic development and skill acquisition. Opposition parties, however, often scrutinize such reforms for potential centralization and uniform ideological imposition. The discussion underscores ongoing tensions between national educational goals and diverse regional perspectives.
