PALGHAR, Maharashtra – Locals protested the death of a 12-year-old girl allegedly punished with 100 sit-ups for arriving late to school. The incident occurred in Palghar district. Police registered a case late Saturday night following the community outcry.
The Class 6 student died at a Mumbai hospital on Friday night. Residents of Sativali in Vasai East gathered Saturday night, refusing to cremate the body until authorities acted. The protest ceased after police registered a case and assured strict action to the family. Cremation then proceeded late at night.
Allegations of Inhuman Punishment
The girl allegedly performed 100 sit-ups on November 8 after reaching school late. Her mother stated the punishment included performing sit-ups with her school bag on her back. The mother attributed her daughter’s death to this ‘inhuman punishment’ by her teacher.
Hundreds of residents accused the school administration of negligence. They demanded immediate accountability. Protesters specifically called for a case against the school and the involved teacher.
Investigation Underway
Police will record statements from the family, witnesses, and school employees. This information will support the ongoing investigation.
Vasai Block Education Officer Pandurang Galange confirmed education officials visited the school on Saturday. No staff members were present during their visit. Galange stated education officials would return to the school for an inquiry on Monday. The department will cooperate fully with the police investigation. It will also initiate appropriate action based on the findings.
