Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) schools currently report 4,247 teaching and 1,666 non-teaching vacancies . The Education Ministry confirmed these figures in a recent Lok Sabha reply.
Overall, NVS has sanctioned 16,865 teaching posts and 9,226 non-teaching posts. The reported vacancies highlight ongoing staffing needs across the system.
Reasons for Vacancies
Minister Jayant Chaudhary stated that vacancies arise from several factors. These include new school openings, retirements, resignations, promotions, transfers, employees going on lien, and school upgradations.
Filling these positions is an ongoing process. NVS adheres to recruitment rules and government-mandated reservation norms. To maintain teaching continuity, the Samiti also appoints teachers and other staff on a contractual basis locally when regular or leave vacancies occur.
Regular Appointments Since 2014
Since 2014 , NVS has made 1,842 regular teaching appointments and 5,561 regular non-teaching appointments . These appointments follow direct recruitment processes and reservation norms.
As of January 1, 2025 , category-wise data shows the distribution of *total filled teaching posts* across NVS:
- EWS: 290
- OBC: 4,235
- SC: 2,118
- ST: 962
For non-teaching posts, total filled positions were:
- EWS: 90
- OBC: 2,703
- SC: 1,753
- ST: 1,002
The year 2023 saw the highest number of regular appointments. Teaching posts filled included 492 Unreserved (UR), 109 EWS, 532 OBC, 205 SC, and 84 ST candidates. Non-teaching appointments in 2023 reached 179 UR, 53 EWS, 419 OBC, 137 SC, and 72 ST candidates.
Rising Contractual Staff Recruitment
NVS has increased its reliance on contractual staff over the past decade. The number of contractual teaching staff rose from 2,189 in 2014 to 3,437 in 2025 . Contractual non-teaching staff also increased from 268 to 1,432 during the same period.
The ministry stated these short-term appointments meet urgent requirements. They ensure students continue to receive services. Minister Chaudhary emphasized that contractual engagements protect student interests when regular staff are unavailable.
