NHRC Launches 2-Week Online Internship for 80 University Students

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has launched a two-week online internship program for 80 university students. The program, named the Online Short Term Internship Programme (OSTI), began in March 2026 and will conclude on March 20, 2026.

The NHRC received 1,147 applications from students across 17 states and Union Territories. Eighty students from diverse academic fields were selected for the program.

Program Goals and Structure

The OSTI program aims to train students to become human rights advocates. Participants will engage with experienced professionals in the human rights field. Bharat Lal, Secretary General of the NHRC, urged interns to utilize the program. He stated, “Use the two weeks to sensitise themselves so that they could recognise injustice wherever it occurs and identify discrimination, whether systemic or otherwise.”

Lal further emphasized the role of citizens in upholding dignity and improving the nation. He linked the concept of a “Developed India” to positive daily experiences in all environments, including homes, schools, and workplaces.

Internship Activities

Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak, Joint Secretary at the NHRC, outlined the program’s components. The online internship includes lectures and various competitions. These activities involve group research projects, book reviews, and declamation contests. Virtual tours of institutions such as Tihar Shelter Home and a Police Station are also part of the schedule. These tours provide insights into institutional operations.
