NCERT Revises Curriculum: AI, Swadeshi, Operation Sindoor Added

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) revised its curriculum this year, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). The changes include new modules on Artificial Intelligence, ‘Operation Sindoor,’ and ‘Swadeshi.’ The revision also led to the removal of some topics and the integration of vocational education across various stages.

Curriculum Alignment and Broader Changes

NCERT’s curriculum updates align with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework. These revisions aim to modernize education and enhance skill-based learning. Beyond the introduction of new modules, the updated curriculum removed certain topics. It also incorporated vocational education, reflecting a broader shift towards practical and skills-oriented learning for students.

Artificial Intelligence for Classes 11 and 12

NCERT has developed new textbooks specifically for Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students in Classes 11 and 12. These materials introduce students to fundamental AI concepts. They also cover practical applications of AI in daily life scenarios.

Officials stated the curriculum focuses on understanding AI’s operational mechanisms. It explores diverse areas where AI is deployed. The modules also address AI’s limitations. Emphasis is placed on appropriate AI usage, its context, and its boundaries.

New Educational Modules

NCERT launched two distinct educational module series this year. These modules introduce students to specific historical and national initiatives.

Swadeshi: Vocal for Local & Self-Reliant India

Two new modules focus on the ‘Swadeshi’ movement. They are titled ‘Swadeshi: Vocal for Local – Middle Stage’ and ‘Swadeshi for a Self-Reliant India – Secondary Stage.’ These modules revisit the historic Swadeshi Movement of 1905. During this period, leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Bipin Chandra Pal advocated for boycotting British goods. They endorsed products manufactured domestically within India.

The modules connect this historical movement with current initiatives. They align with the Prime Minister’s vision for an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat,’ or Self-Reliant India. Students also learn about the India Semiconductor Mission. This mission aims to reduce import dependence and build domestic capability in the developing semiconductor sector.

Operation Sindoor Modules

NCERT introduced two special modules dedicated to ‘Operation Sindoor’ for Classes 3 through 12. These modules describe the mission as a military operation. They also present it as a commitment to protect peace. The modules honor the lives lost in the Pahalgam terror attack.

The content is divided into two parts based on grade level. Part 1, ‘Operation Sindoor – A Saga of Valour,’ is for preparatory and middle stages (Classes 3 to 8). Part 2, ‘Operation Sindoor – A Mission of Honour and Bravery,’ targets the secondary stage (Classes 9 to 12).

Competency-Based Textbooks Introduced

NCERT unveiled updated textbooks for Classes 4, 5, 7, and 8. These new educational materials use a competency-based model. This approach prioritizes the development of essential skills. It also focuses on students achieving a strong grasp of core concepts. The design emphasizes the application of knowledge in real-world scenarios.
