The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has launched two new educational modules for students. These modules, titled Swadeshi: Vocal for Local – Middle Stage and Swadeshi for a Self-Reliant India – Secondary Stage , aim to educate students on India’s self-reliance initiatives.
The modules align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for an Atmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India. This vision emphasizes national strength and dignity through self-reliance, a theme highlighted in the Prime Minister’s 79th Independence Day speech.
Focus on Made-in-India
The Prime Minister has consistently encouraged citizens and businesses to support Made-in-India products. This support is presented as an act of national pride, not a requirement.
The new NCERT modules connect this contemporary push for self-reliance with India’s historical Swadeshi Movement. This movement, originating in 1905, saw national leaders mobilize the populace to boycott British goods.
Figures like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Bipin Chandra Pal championed the adoption of Indian-made products during this period. The Swadeshi Movement later evolved, described as the ‘Soul of Swaraj,’ deepening its focus on social and spiritual self-reliance.
Connecting History to Modern Initiatives
The educational content draws parallels between the historical Swadeshi movement and current government programs. Students learn about initiatives designed to boost domestic production and reduce import dependency.
One such initiative is the India Semiconductor Mission . This program seeks to build domestic capability in the crucial semiconductor sector. It aims to decrease India’s reliance on imported semiconductor components.
Beyond technological advancements, the modules also feature stories of grassroots entrepreneurship. These narratives embody the ‘Vocal for Local’ spirit, showcasing local businesses and their contributions.
One District One Product Initiative
The NCERT modules also introduce students to the government’s One District One Product (ODOP) initiative. This program identifies and promotes unique products from each district across India.
Currently, over 1,200 unique products have been identified across more than 750 districts. These products are now available through government e-commerce platforms like Government e-Marketplace (GeM) and Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC).
The ODOP initiative also includes international promotion. Dedicated ODOP Walls promote these Indian products in global cities. These include locations such as Singapore, Milan, New York, and Tokyo.
