Murshidabad University Renamed Maharaja Krishnanath University

West Bengal’s Education Minister Bratya Basu announced Saturday the renaming of Murshidabad University to Murshidabad Maharaja Krishnanath University. The change honors Maharaja Krishnanath, a historical figure from the region.

University Renamed to Honor Historical Figure

The state Assembly passed a bill to rename the institution. Minister Basu stated this move restores historical legacy. Maharaja Krishnanath, who lived for 22 years, donated his property. This donation facilitated higher education for Murshidabad’s children.

Educationist Dr. Rezaul Karim first proposed the name change. Minister Basu credited Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for restoring honor to the Maharaja after 123 years. The university traces its origins to Berhampore Krishnanath College, founded in 1853 .

The college was later renamed Murshidabad College. This change disappointed some local residents. They petitioned to restore the original name linked to the royal family. Chief Minister Banerjee approved the renaming to recognize public sentiment. She acknowledged the emotional connection Murshidabad residents have to the institution.

Legislative Support and Future Expectations

Local legislators welcomed the decision. Mohammed Ali, TMC MLA from Lalgola, and Rafikul Islam Mondal, MLA from Basirhat Uttar, thanked the government. They stated the move respects public feelings.

Arup Das, BJP MLA from Kanthi Dakshin, also expressed gratitude. He urged the Education Minister to ensure Krishnanath College receives full university-level recognition. He highlighted the college’s historical and academic importance.

The bill’s passage means the university will officially operate as Murshidabad Maharaja Krishnanath University. Legislators from all parties described this as a restoration of honor.
