Meghalaya Approves Bill for State Public Health University

Meghalaya’s cabinet approved a bill to upgrade the Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH) in Shillong to a state university. The decision came during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday evening. The proposed legislation is named the Indian Institute of Public Health Shillong Bill, 2026.

This upgrade will allow IIPH to grant degrees to public health graduates and researchers. Officials stated the move aims to enhance academic independence. It also seeks to establish the institute as a leading center for public health research. Furthermore, it will boost capacity building for public health studies across the northeast region.

Other Cabinet Approvals

The cabinet also gave a no-objection certificate for infrastructure expansion at Eco Resort, Nongkhlaw. This includes work related to furnishing, operation, and maintenance. The approval supports the resort’s expansion projects.

Additionally, the Meghalaya State Policy for the promotion of anganwadi workers was approved. This policy focuses on improving career advancement opportunities. It also aims to strengthen the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) framework within the state.
