An MBBS student, Janisur Alam , was released by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday evening. He had been detained on Friday morning in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district. The detention followed allegations of links to terror outfits, including suspected involvement in a recent Delhi blast.
Detention Details
NIA sleuths intercepted Alam in the Surjapur Bazar area. He was returning from a family wedding at his ancestral home in Konal village, near Dalkhola. Officers tracked his movements using mobile-tower location data, a senior police officer confirmed. Alam is a resident of Ludhiana and studies at Al-Falah University, Haryana.
Questioning and Release
Alam underwent questioning at the NIA’s Siliguri office. His release occurred on Saturday evening, following this questioning. The NIA seized his mobile phone during the process. Authorities instructed Alam to be present for further questioning if summoned by the probe agency.
Allegations and Investigation
Central probe agency sources reported suspicious activity prior to Alam’s detention. He was allegedly seen “loitering suspiciously” near a local station. During questioning, Alam reportedly attempted to flee. The NIA has stated it has not yet established any direct connection between Alam and the Delhi blast. Digital devices and various documents were also seized from his possession as part of the ongoing investigation.
Family’s Defense
Alam’s relatives and family members have strongly denied the allegations. His uncle described Alam as a “calm and polite young man” consistently focused on his studies. Alam’s mother asserted her son is “law-abiding” and found the accusations “beyond comprehension.”
University Under Scrutiny
Al-Falah University, where Alam pursues his MBBS degree, has faced recent scrutiny. The university lost its All India Universities (AIU) membership. This membership loss occurred amid an ongoing probe related to the Delhi blast. Reports also indicate the university’s official website has been taken down.
