Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed all public universities in the state to create and implement time-bound plans. These plans aim to improve their national and international rankings and enhance academic quality. A dedicated digital dashboard will monitor each university’s progress.
Monitoring and Accountability
CM Fadnavis issued these instructions during a review meeting. The meeting focused on the National Education Policy (NEP) and ‘Vision Maharashtra 2047.’ Universities must now assess current academic quality, research, infrastructure, and existing rankings. These assessments will form the foundation for their improvement plans. The state will establish an online dashboard to streamline monitoring and ensure accountability.
Targeting NIRF Rankings
An extensive roadmap for public universities, outlining goals up to 2047, was presented by Additional Chief Secretary B Venugopal Reddy. A primary objective is to boost performance within the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). NIRF rankings, published by the Ministry of Education, are crucial for national recognition and attracting talent.
Enhancing Employability and Skills
A core strategy involves strengthening quality education and skill-based programs. Universities will scale up engagement with industry partnerships, internships, and apprenticeships. These initiatives aim to directly improve graduate employability, providing skills demanded by the job market.
Becoming a Global Education Hub
Officials discussed steps to position Maharashtra as a global education destination. The state aims to prevent local students from leaving for higher education elsewhere. It also plans to attract Non-Resident Indian (NRI) and foreign students. This strategy seeks to foster a diverse academic environment.
Advanced Research and Global Collaboration
The roadmap emphasizes generating high-Technology Readiness Level (TRL) research. Developing commercially valuable patents is another priority, encouraging innovation. To prepare students for the global job market, curricula will align with future skill demands. Universities will also utilize resources for collaboration with foreign institutions, offering international exposure.
Addressing Competition in Higher Education
Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted the rapid advancements made by private universities. He stressed the imperative for public universities to intensify quality improvement efforts. This focus is critical for public institutions to remain competitive in the evolving higher education landscape.
