Teachers Plan Statewide Protest

Teachers’ organizations held a joint meeting at Raosaheb Patwardhan Vidyalaya and Junior College in Pune. They announced potential school closures for November 24, 2025 , according to a Navarashtra report. This protest targets the Supreme Court’s decision to make TET qualification mandatory.

The unions demand the state government immediately file a review petition against the Supreme Court ruling. They also seek coordination with the central government. If no action is taken within two weeks, the Maharashtra State Primary Teachers’ Association and the Municipal Primary Teachers’ Association will call for the statewide closure. Thousands of students could be affected by this protest.

Supreme Court Mandate for TET

The Supreme Court ruling mandates TET qualification for both aspiring teachers and in-service teachers seeking promotions. Specific exemptions apply: Teachers appointed before the RTE Act with less than five years of service remaining are exempt. Teachers in minority institutions are also exempt until a larger bench decides the RTE Act’s applicability to such schools.

State legislative sources estimate 70-75% of Maharashtra’s teachers, approximately 600,000 individuals, must clear the TET within two years. Failure to qualify within the specified period may lead to termination. However, affected teachers will receive retirement benefits if their service period meets existing rules.
