M Jagadesh Kumar Appointed IIM Calcutta Board Chairman

Former University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar is now the Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta. The Ministry of Education confirmed the appointment. President Droupadi Murmu approved the four-year term.

Appointment Details

Kumar’s term as Chairman of the Board of Governors at IIM Calcutta will last for four years. It will end earlier if he reaches seventy years of age. This decision followed approval from the President.

Background of M. Jagadesh Kumar

Kumar has a distinguished career in education. He previously served as the Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He also held a professorship at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. Recently, he received the Padma Shri award. This recognized his significant contributions to the education sector.

Role of the Board of Governors

The Board of Governors (BoG) is the highest governing body at IIMs. Its responsibilities include setting strategic direction and approving financial matters. The board also formulates policies. It comprises industry leaders, academics, and government representatives. They ensure academic excellence and operational autonomy at the institutions.
