A Class 12 student died early Sunday morning after an attack by junior students near Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. Police confirmed the student succumbed to injuries sustained during an assault on December 4 . The incident occurred at Government Arignar Anna Model Higher Secondary School in Patteeswaram.

Fourteen Class 11 students allegedly attacked the senior student. The assault reportedly followed a clash between the two classes. Accused students used a wooden stick, striking the victim on the head. This act caused serious head injuries, police officials stated.

Medical Response and Outcome

The victim’s parents rushed him to the Government Hospital in Kumbakonam. Due to his severe injuries, he was transferred to a private hospital in Thanjavur. There, medical teams performed surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain. Despite interventions, the student’s condition worsened. He passed away around 2:30 AM on Sunday , police confirmed.

Police Action and Initial Charges

Police arrested all 14 Class 11 students involved. They are lodged in a juvenile home. Patteeswaram Police initially registered an attempt to murder case. This charge reflected the assault’s severity before the victim’s death, police said.

Alteration to Murder Charge

The victim’s death led to a charge re-evaluation. A Patteeswaram Police official stated, "After post-mortem, we’ll alter it into a murder case." This change is standard when an assault turns fatal. The post-mortem will officially determine the cause of death. Its findings will support the revised murder charge.

Juvenile Justice Framework

The accused are minors. Their case falls under India’s Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. This framework focuses on rehabilitation. A Juvenile Justice Board will oversee their proceedings. The Board assesses student involvement and intent. Outcomes can include counselling or observation home placement. This system balances child welfare with accountability for serious crimes.

Ongoing Investigation and Next Steps

Police investigation continues. Investigators collect evidence, including witness statements from the school. They aim to reconstruct the December 4 events. Post-mortem findings are awaited. Police will submit a comprehensive report to the Juvenile Justice Board. The Board will then commence formal hearings, examining all facts. Further updates are expected as proceedings advance.

The death raises concerns about student safety. Government Arignar Anna Model Higher Secondary School faces scrutiny. The community near Patteeswaram is concerned about conflict resolution.
