Kerala Launches Road Safety Cadet Program for Students

The Kerala government will launch a ‘road safety cadet’ program for school students this month. The initiative aims to improve road safety awareness. The General Education and Motor Vehicles departments are partnering for the program.

Program Details

Minister V. Sivankutty announced the program on Thursday. It will officially begin later this month in Mavelikkara, Alappuzha district. A pilot phase was already completed at John F. Kennedy Memorial School.

First Phase Implementation

The program’s first phase will start with the upcoming academic year. It will be implemented in one high school or higher secondary school per educational district. Government and aided institutions will receive priority.

Cadet Selection and Training

Each cadet batch will consist of 30 students. There will be an equal number of boys and girls in each batch. The curriculum includes 15 hours of academic classes.

Cadets will also undergo five hours of work experience. Ten hours of physical training are included. Training will cover road safety rules, trauma care, and first aid.

The program incorporates anti-drug activities. Swimming lessons are also part of the training, in partnership with the fire brigade. Cadets will gain technical experience through workshops with the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).

Cadet Roles and Uniform

Cadets will wear red T-shirts with black and yellow stripes. They will also wear black shoes and maroon caps. Their duties include serving as safety coordinators in school vans.

Cadets will help manage traffic within school premises. They will also assist Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) officials. This assistance will focus on analyzing road accident causes.

Funding and Recognition

The Kerala Road Safety Authority (KRSA) fund will provide Rs 10 lakh. This money is allocated for cadet uniforms. Cadets who complete the training will receive certificates from the MVD.

The government is considering awarding grace marks to cadets. This recognition aims to encourage participation and success in the program.
