Kerala Education Overhaul: AC Classrooms, Lifts Planned

The Kerala government is initiating a broad modernization of its general education system. The plan includes installing air conditioning in classrooms and lifts in multi-story school buildings. This overhaul also targets administrative efficiency, with faster file processing in government offices. Officials received directives to improve school infrastructure and daily operations during a meeting chaired by the General Education Minister. These changes aim to enhance both learning environments and administrative speed.

Administrative Reforms

A key focus is accelerating administrative processes. The government will prioritize clearing long-pending files. A new action plan will ensure timely processing of all incoming documents. The Director of General Education and the Additional Director (General) will oversee this progress. They will submit regular updates to the government.

Nurturing Constitutional Values

Schools will play a role in reinforcing constitutional principles. Students will recite the Preamble to the Constitution during special assemblies. This aims to instill democratic values. The meeting also discussed improving physical learning spaces for students.

Infrastructure Upgrades

New school buildings will prioritize student comfort. All classrooms will have fans. Air conditioning will be installed in key rooms. Lifts will be mandatory for buildings taller than three floors. Ramps will also be included to ensure accessibility for students with disabilities.

Enhancing School Experience

The government is exploring ways to move away from traditional classroom seating arrangements. Financial barriers to school excursions will be removed. No child should miss out due to cost. District-level inspections will verify compliance with inclusive participation orders. To foster a positive atmosphere, students can attend school without uniforms on festival days and birthdays.

Teacher Guidelines and Support

Teachers are instructed to refuse gifts from students. Academic quality will be boosted through the ‘subject minimum’ program. Learning support initiatives, including refreshments, can be organized. These will be facilitated by Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), School Management Committees, and alumni networks.

Protecting Vacation Time and Oversight

Student vacation periods will be protected. Disruptions will only occur for valid reasons. The vigilance system within the General Education Directorate will be expanded. This will tighten oversight of departmental operations. Education officers will conduct regular school visits. They will report findings directly to the Director. The Director will brief the minister monthly. Officials failing to implement decisions will face strict action. Senior education officials attended the meeting, including General Education Secretary K Vasuki and Director of General Education Umesh NSK.
