Kerala Adds 28 Communities to SEBC List for Education Benefits

Kerala has added 28 more communities to its list of Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC). This decision grants students from these groups access to reservation and other educational benefits in higher education. The state cabinet approved the change on Wednesday.

The recommendation came from the State Backward Classes Commission. These communities were already on the Other Backward Classes (OBC) list. However, they were not included in the SEBC category. This SEBC status is required for educational concessions and reservation in higher education.

Impact of Inclusion

Officials stated that the previous omission prevented students from these communities from accessing certain educational opportunities and support schemes. The existing SEBC list was based on the 1965 Kumara Pillai Commission report. This report identified communities eligible for backward class benefits.

The issue gained attention recently. The government then requested a detailed report from the State Backward Classes Commission. The commission reviewed the matter. It recommended adding the 28 communities to the SEBC list. The cabinet then approved this recommendation.

Expected Outcomes

The inclusion is expected to improve access to higher education for students from these communities. They should receive better financial and institutional support. Education experts and community representatives welcomed the move. They believe it will enhance opportunities and reduce existing inequalities in education.

Government sources confirmed the inclusion aims to ensure fair access to higher education. It will support students from socially and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds across Kerala.
