Kerala Agriculture Minister P Prasad announced Saturday that the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) fee hike will be reconsidered. This decision follows widespread student protests against the revised course fees.
Minister Prasad held a meeting with KAU authorities. Student organizations had conducted mass protests against the fee changes. Speaking to reporters, Prasad stated the government directed KAU. The directive ensures the fee revision does not become a burden for students.
Government Directive and Committee Action
Prasad confirmed, “The course fee structure will be reconsidered.” He added, “The state government has given clear directions to KAU that any fee hike should not affect students adversely.”
The university’s executive committee must take the final decision. A meeting of this committee has been convened. Prasad anticipates “a major reduction in fees.” He stated the proposal would be considered, with an announcement coming soon.
Prasad provided assurances regarding student finances. “No student will be affected due to financial issues,” he stated. He added that fees would be reduced further. This reduction depends on the government releasing funds to the university.
Fee Hike Details and University Response
Students alleged significant fee increases. Annual course fees for undergraduate and postgraduate programs reportedly jumped. The alleged increase was from Rs 24,000 to Rs 72,000 .
University authorities acknowledged the fee hike. They attributed the increase to a severe financial crisis. Authorities confirmed the revision will be reviewed. This review will happen during the upcoming executive meeting.
Student Support Measures
KAU will also consider providing scholarships. These scholarships aim to support students’ academic activities.
A specific case involved Arjun, a student from Thamarassery. Arjun had discontinued his course recently. He cited inability to afford studies following the fee hike. Prasad confirmed directives to bring Arjun back to KAU. “The decision has been taken to readmit him once he returns,” Prasad added.
