The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has issued a safety advisory and launched helpline numbers for Kashmiri students across India. This action follows reports of profiling, harassment, and evictions faced by students after a recent bomb blast in Delhi.
JKSA advised students to remain vigilant. They urged avoiding unnecessary movement, public gatherings, and travel. Students should also refrain from participating in politically motivated discussions through any medium.
Reports of Harassment and Eviction
The advisory comes after JKSA received numerous reports detailing students’ experiences. These include profiling, harassment, and sudden evictions from their accommodations. The association stated this climate of fear began in the wake of the Red Fort blast in Delhi.
Students in various states reported aggressive verification drives and intimidating questioning. They also cited disturbances in hostels and hostile conduct from local residents. Some students faced directives to vacate rented rooms without prior notice.
JKSA’s Stance and Support
Aadit Bhat, National General Secretary of JKSA, emphasized that Kashmiri students contribute to India’s academic, scientific, and professional fields. He stated their identity must not be criminalized or viewed with suspicion. Bhat urged law enforcement to investigate the Delhi blast freely, but without subjecting innocent Kashmiris to unjust treatment.
Nasir Khuehami, National Convenor of JKSA, announced the establishment of a dedicated 24×7 rapid-response coordination team. This team aims to provide immediate support to students. JKSA is communicating with university administrations, local police stations, and state authorities nationwide. The goal is to prevent Kashmiri students from being unfairly targeted or subjected to collective punishment.
Khuehami affirmed that JKSA will address unlawful evictions immediately with relevant authorities. He encouraged students to report any pressure from landlords or hostel managements.
Helpline Numbers for Students
The JKSA has provided multiple helpline numbers for Kashmiri students seeking support. A dedicated team stands ready to assist students facing difficulties.
