The Karnataka Cabinet has approved the draft of the Rohith Vemula Bill. This marks a step towards its formal introduction. The bill aims to prevent exclusion and injustice in education.
Rohith Vemula Bill Moves Forward
Law Minister H K Patil announced the decision after a Cabinet meeting on Thursday. The bill, officially titled the Karnataka Rohith Vemula (Prevention of Exclusion or Injustice) Right to Education and Dignity Bill, 2026, was discussed in detail. It will now undergo further review.
The government is seeking additional input from the Home Department. This consultation is crucial before the bill can be finalized. Patil stated that the bill will be presented again at the next Cabinet meeting.
Honour Killing Bill Also Reviewed
The Cabinet also discussed another significant piece of legislation. This is the Karnataka Freedom of Choice in Marriage and Prevention and Prohibition of Crimes in the Name of Honour and Tradition Bill, 2026. Similar to the Rohith Vemula Bill, this legislation requires further consultation with the Home Department.
Patil explained that aspects of the honour killing bill also need the Home Department’s opinion. It has been referred back for their review. The government intends to bring both bills before the Cabinet again after receiving these inputs.
Scope of Rohith Vemula Bill
When asked about the bill’s applicability, Patil remained circumspect. He was questioned whether the Rohith Vemula Bill would cover only Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes or also include Other Backward Classes.
Patil indicated that the specifics regarding its coverage will be clarified once the bill is approved. He stated, “We will discuss the matter when it comes to you as an approved Bill.” This suggests the final draft will address these details.
