JNUSU Elections 2025: 67% Turnout, Results on Nov 6

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students concluded voting in the JNUSU elections on Tuesday. The polls recorded a 67 percent voter turnout . According to the JNUSU election committee, results are scheduled for announcement on November 6 .

This year’s 67 percent turnout represents a slight decline from the 70 percent recorded in the previous election cycle. The 2023–24 polls had witnessed 73 percent voting, marking the highest participation rate in the university’s student elections over the past decade. A total of 9,043 students were eligible to cast their votes in this year’s contest.

Election Schedule and Campus Activity

Polling officially began at 9 AM on Tuesday. It was set to continue until 5:30 PM, with an allocated break from 1 PM to 2:30 PM. The university campus observed student engagement throughout the day. Campaign songs, drums, and chants accompanied students as they queued at polling booths to participate in the electoral process.

These elections serve to determine the new central panel leadership and elect school councillors. Students cast ballots for four primary central panel positions: president, vice-president, general secretary, and joint secretary. Additionally, voters selected candidates for 42 councillor seats representing various academic schools within the university.

Key Contenders and Ideological Divide

The JNUSU elections are largely characterized by a contest between two prominent student political blocs: the Left Unity and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The ABVP is affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Left Unity is a unified front comprising several student organizations. These include the All India Students’ Association (AISA), the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and the Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF). This electoral competition is frequently seen as reflecting broader national ideological undercurrents within the student community.

A total of twenty candidates are vying for the four central panel posts. The candidate panels for the main contenders are detailed below:

Post Left Unity Candidate ABVP Candidate
President Aditi Mishra Vikas Patel
Vice-President Kizhakoot Gopika Babu Tanya Kumari
General Secretary Sunil Yadav Rajeshwar Kant Dubey
Joint Secretary Danish Ali Anuj

Campaign Agendas

Both major blocs presented distinct campaign platforms. The ABVP focused its campaign on themes of “performance and nationalism.” Conversely, the Left bloc’s agenda highlighted “inclusion, accessibility, and student welfare.”

Aishe Ghosh, a former JNUSU president, commented on the Left Unity’s prospects during the campaign. She expressed confidence that “The Left unity will win all four central panel seats.”

Historical Context and Past Outcomes

Previous JNUSU election results indicate a competitive landscape. In the last election, AISA’s Nitish Kumar successfully secured the president’s post. However, the ABVP also achieved a notable victory, with Vaibhav Meena winning the joint secretary position. This particular win marked the ABVP’s first central panel success in a decade. The party characterized this outcome as a “historic shift” in JNU’s campus politics at the time.

Upcoming Results

The JNUSU election committee is now preparing for vote counting. The official results for all central panel and councillor positions are slated for announcement on November 6 . The outcome will determine the new student representatives for the upcoming academic term at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
