JNU Students Demand VC Removal in Referendum

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) announced a student referendum. It will take place Tuesday across all university schools. The referendum asks students if the vice chancellor should be removed.

Former members of the JNU Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) will oversee the vote. Results will be released Wednesday. The JNU vice chancellor’s office did not immediately respond.

Referendum Amid Caste Remarks Controversy

The referendum follows recent caste remarks attributed to the JNU Vice Chancellor. Former JNUSU President Nitish Kumar stated the vote allows students to voice opinions on the VC’s continuation. “The voices of the students will be heard,” Kumar told PTI.

Background of Recent JNU Protests

JNU has faced multiple controversies. Protests have occurred since early February. This followed the suspension of four JNUSU office bearers and former president Kumar. They received two-semester suspensions.

The university cited “extensive damage to university property.” This occurred during a November 21, 2025, protest at the B R Ambedkar Central Library. Protests continued demanding the revocation of these suspensions.

Escalating Tensions and Arrests

The situation intensified with clashes between Left and Right-wing students. Allegations of controversial caste remarks by the JNU VC drew criticism. Students and teacher bodies condemned the remarks.

JNUSU reported the detention of over 50 students. Fourteen students were arrested. They marched to the Ministry of Education (MoE). Demands included UGC regulations, funding, and the VC’s resignation over casteist remarks.

The group known as the “JNU-14” spent three days in Tihar Jail. JNUSU stated the VC did not condemn the police actions. Repeated complaints to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) sought disciplinary action against the VC.

Student Union Vows Continued Action

Students and teachers requested clarification on the VC’s statements from the MoE. The referendum aims to escalate the movement due to a lack of official action. JNUSU Vice President Gopika K. Babu stated, “We will not remain silent.”

“The VC has attacked our dignity and self-respect,” Babu said Monday. “The fight for her removal from the post of Vice Chancellor will not stop.”
