Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus saw violent clashes between student groups early Monday morning. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) accused each other of instigating attacks. The incident reportedly occurred around 1:30 AM, resulting in injuries to several students.
Protest Leads to Confrontation
The JNUSU organized a protest march, the “Samta Juloos,” towards the East Gate. Protesters demanded the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit. They also called for the revocation of a rustication order against some students.
Students aligned with the JNUSU claimed the university administration did not engage with their march. Instead, they alleged the administration allowed ABVP members to confront the protesters. Videos circulating online showed confusion and fear on campus during the standoff.
Accusations Fly Between Groups
Left-backed student organizations, including the All India Students’ Association (AISA), stated that ABVP activists threw stones. These activists allegedly attacked unarmed students near the JNUSU encampment. Several students sustained injuries in the alleged stone-pelting incident following a scuffle.
The ABVP denied these allegations. They accused Left-backed organizations of provoking the clashes. The ABVP also claimed these groups spread misinformation about the incident. University authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident. The situation on campus remained tense throughout Monday.
