Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren Visits Oxford, WEF for Development

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren will visit Oxford University in the United Kingdom and attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. The visit aims to foster academic ties and discuss Jharkhand’s development priorities. A state delegation, led by CM Soren, will participate in these international engagements.

World Economic Forum Engagement

The Jharkhand delegation will attend the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos from January 18 to 24 . This participation forms part of an official visit to Europe. The WEF meeting facilitates global discussions on economic and developmental issues.

Oxford University Visit

Following the WEF, CM Soren will visit Oxford University. He will engage with academic institutions, including St John’s College and All Souls College. Soren will deliver a special lecture at the Blavatnik School of Government, focusing on public policy and governance.

These engagements highlight Jharkhand’s priorities: inclusive development, education, and institutional capacity. The visit positions the state’s leadership within international policy and academic exchanges. Jharkhand aims to strengthen its governance agenda through education and institutional development.

Legacy of Jaipal Singh Munda

The Oxford connection for Jharkhand began over a century ago in 1922 . Jaipal Singh Munda, an Adivasi from the Munda community in Chotanagpur, studied at St John’s College, Oxford. His presence at Oxford challenged barriers to global higher education for indigenous communities under colonial rule.

At Oxford, Munda studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE). He served as president of the Oxford Union Debating Society. Munda also represented the university in hockey. After returning, Munda became a key advocate for Adivasi rights. He played a role in the political movement leading to Jharkhand’s creation in 2000.

Oxford University recognizes Munda as a distinguished alumnus. His achievements in academics, sports, and public leadership are recorded in St John’s College archives and its Hall of Fame. In Jharkhand, Munda is revered as Marang Gomke, meaning “the great leader.”

Global Education Access

Jharkhand institutionalized access to international education through two scholarship programs. These include the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Overseas Scholarship and the Chevening Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Scholarship . These programs support students from Scheduled Tribes and other historically marginalized communities.

The initiatives represent long-term investments in human capital. They aim to strengthen public institutions, policy capabilities, and leadership within Jharkhand. Global academic exposure serves this purpose. Oxford University formally recognized Munda’s contributions through academic scholarship in 2012.

Future Outlook for Jharkhand

CM Soren’s visit continues this historical dialogue with Oxford. It re-establishes conversation between Jharkhand and global learning centers. As Jharkhand nears twenty-five years of statehood, the visit underscores the state’s commitment. Its future builds on education, capability, and creating pathways for talent to engage globally. This talent will return with knowledge and purpose.
