JEE Advanced 2026: IIT Kanpur Pilots Adaptive Test

IIT Kanpur is piloting a new adaptive test format for the JEE Advanced exam. The questions are ready. IIT Roorkee, organizing the 2026 JEE Advanced, has approved the pilot. The new format will likely debut around JEE Advanced 2026 .

The IIT Council tasked IIT Kanpur and the Joint Admission Board with developing the adaptive test. This test will assess qualitative and reasoning skills. If successful, it could replace the current JEE Advanced format. In the proposed system, questions change based on a student’s performance during the test.

IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal initially proposed the idea. The IIT Council discussed it last year. This council oversees the premier engineering institutions.

JEE Advanced Structure

The JEE Advanced is the second stage of IIT admissions. Students first take the JEE Main. The top 2.5 lakh rank holders in JEE Main qualify for JEE Advanced.

JEE Main 2026 Schedule

JEE Main 2026 has two sessions. Session 1 results were declared on February 16. 12 students achieved 100 percentile. Session 2 exams run from April 2 to April 9. JEE Advanced 2026 is scheduled for May 17. IIT Roorkee will conduct this year’s exam.

Pilot Test Details

IIT Kanpur will test the adaptive format on its own students first. This pilot aims to gather performance data. IIT Roorkee’s approval is confirmed. The adaptive test will not be implemented in the official JEE Advanced exam this year.

The change could occur from 2026 onwards. The Joint Admission Board must first clear the new format. This ensures a smooth transition for students.

Director Manindra Agrawal expressed concerns about the current JEE Advanced. He sought to make the exam less stressful and more student-friendly. The current format can increase coaching dependency.

Goals of Adaptive Testing

The 55th IIT Council meeting minutes highlight benefits of the new model. These include reduced coaching dependency. Enhanced fairness in testing is another goal. The format also aims for flexible and secure testing environments.

Adaptive testing adjusts question difficulty. Students answer questions based on their previous responses. This provides a more accurate assessment of individual abilities. It aims to identify a student’s true understanding.
