India’s Education Sector Embraces AI: New Centers and Courses Launched

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the Bodhan AI Centre of Excellence at IIT Madras on Wednesday. The launch occurred during the Bharat Bodhan AI Conclave 2026 in New Delhi.

AI Research and Education Expansion Announced

Several Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) announced new AI-focused initiatives. These include research hubs and academic programs. The announcements aim to boost artificial intelligence development and education in India.

IIT Bombay Partners with Columbia University

IIT Bombay and Columbia University will establish a joint research center. It will be named the “Columbia–IIT Bombay Centre of AI for Manufacturing.” The center’s goal is to create AI systems for real-world manufacturing challenges. These systems will be robust, scalable, and human-centric.

The center will apply AI to various manufacturing sectors. These include semiconductors, robotics, and pharmaceuticals. It will also support food processing, construction, and logistics.

IIMs Launch New AI Programs

Leading management institutes also introduced new AI-related academic programs. IIM Ranchi will open a Centre for Teaching with Artificial Intelligence. This center will focus on integrating AI into teaching methodologies.

IIM Jammu, in partnership with the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, launched a dual-degree MBA. This program focuses on AI and Business Analytics. It prepares students for management roles in technology-driven fields.

IIM Lucknow has introduced new postgraduate and undergraduate programs in Artificial Intelligence. This includes two specialized Tech MBA programs. These programs cater to students interested in AI and business applications.

Bodhan AI: ‘NPCI of Education’

Minister Pradhan described the Bodhan AI Centre as the “NPCI of Education.” NPCI, the National Payments Corporation of India, manages digital payment systems. Pradhan stated Bodhan AI will be a common, interoperable platform. It will support institutions, startups, and researchers in building AI learning solutions nationwide.

The Bharat Bodhan AI Conclave 2026 is taking place at Bharat Mandapam. It brings together education leaders, policymakers, and technology experts. The event aims to accelerate AI integration in India’s education system. The conclave continues on February 13, 2026, with sessions on digital public infrastructure, AI platforms, and emerging technologies.

AI as a School Subject

Starting with the 2026–27 academic session, Artificial Intelligence will be taught as a skill subject. This subject will be introduced to students from Class 3 onwards. The initiative aims to build early foundational knowledge in AI.
