The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to ensure the safety of Indian medical students in Iran. This urgent appeal comes amidst escalating political tension and widespread unrest reported across the country.
IYC National President Uday Bhanu Chib officially communicated these concerns. He sent separate letters to both PM Modi and Minister Jaishankar. Chib specifically highlighted the significant anxiety currently felt by Indian students studying in Iran. He also noted the distress among their families back home, who report difficulties establishing clear and consistent communication with their loved ones.
Safety Measures for Students
Thousands of Indian students are presently enrolled in medical colleges across various locations in Iran. The IYC leader called upon the Indian government to implement immediate measures. He requested close monitoring of the developing situation within Iran.
Chib’s letter also stressed the importance of strengthened coordination with the Indian Embassy in Tehran. This coordination aims to provide direct support and information to students. The IYC further urged the government to issue timely advisories. These advisories would keep students and their families informed about the evolving security situation.
A crucial demand from the IYC included the preparation of comprehensive emergency, contingency, and evacuation plans. The letter explicitly stated, "The lack of clear communication and visible preparedness has added to the concerns of students and their families back home."
The IYC reiterated its stance on student welfare. "The safety of Indian students abroad must remain a priority," the letter affirmed. "We seek your immediate intervention to ensure their protection and reassurance during this challenging period."
Growing Unrest in Iran
Reports indicate a surge in protest activities across Iran since Friday. These demonstrations have impacted multiple regions and cities. In the capital city of Tehran, shopkeepers initiated a significant strike on Sunday. These actions are a direct response to persistent concerns over the country’s economic stagnation.
The unrest has led to severe consequences. Official reports confirm at least nine individuals have lost their lives amidst the protests. Additionally, 44 people have reportedly sustained injuries. The political and social environment in Iran remains highly volatile, drawing significant international attention and concern.
International Response and US Involvement
The international community has closely watched the situation. US President Donald Trump issued a clear statement regarding the unfolding events. He declared that the United States would intervene if the Iranian government used force against peaceful demonstrators. This warning underscores the delicate international relations surrounding Iran.
This statement follows previous military actions involving the US and Iran. In June, the United States conducted bombing operations on three Iranian nuclear sites. President Trump had characterized these actions as a "very successful attack" following a 12-day period of heightened escalation between Israel and Iran.
The current situation highlights the complex challenges faced by international students in volatile regions. Indian authorities continue to assess the best course of action to safeguard their citizens abroad.
