Chennai, India – The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Indian Railways Finance Corporation (IRFC) have established India’s first Single Cell Omics Translational (SCOT) Research Laboratory . The new facility, located at IIT Madras, aims to significantly advance precision healthcare, drug discovery, and medical skill development nationwide.
IRFC has provided a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) grant totaling Rs 10.83 crore for the laboratory’s establishment. This substantial funding supports the lab’s mission to bridge engineering and medicine, directly impacting public health advancements across the country.
Advancing Precision Healthcare Through SCOT
The SCOT Lab will utilize advanced single-cell research to enhance healthcare outcomes. Its primary functions include facilitating early disease diagnosis, providing accurate disease prognosis, and discovering new biomarkers. The lab will also conduct critical drug screening for various medical conditions.
The research scope covers a wide spectrum of diseases. These include cancer, cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, and inflammatory conditions. The lab will also focus on metabolic disorders and other non-communicable diseases, addressing major public health challenges.
V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, emphasized the collaboration’s importance. "This partnership with IRFC marks a crucial step in accelerating India’s journey in drug discovery and precision medicine," he stated. Kamakoti added that the SCOT Lab will enhance the institute’s capacity to develop solutions for early diagnostics, targeted therapeutics, and next-generation healthcare innovation.
