IIT Madras Develops Dashboard to Cut Road Accidents

CHENNAI — The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has developed a new Integrated Road Safety Dashboard. This platform targets a significant reduction in road accidents across India. It also aims to strengthen national road safety governance through advanced data integration.

This dashboard functions as a standardized and scalable digital infrastructure. It is designed for widespread adoption by all States and Union Territories. Each region can configure the platform. This ensures alignment with their specific road safety strategies and existing governance frameworks.

Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, emphasized the complex nature of road safety challenges. He stated that effective solutions demand coordinated action from multiple stakeholders. Amitabh Thakur, Transport Commissioner-cum-Chairman of the State Transport Authority in Odisha, praised the dashboard’s utility. He stated it provides a crucial analytical backbone. It also offers continuous monitoring capabilities. These elements are vital for sustained enforcement efforts and effective interventions.

Thakur further explained the benefits for frontline personnel. He highlighted that employing a data-driven, human factors-based approach empowers road safety officers.
