Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur launched a new school focused on digital learning, applied artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning on Tuesday. The initiative aims to redefine AI innovation across various sectors.
New School Launched
The institution established the Jyoti Chatterjee School of Digital Engineering, Applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. It will operate under the Office of the Dean (Research & Development). This marks a shift from traditional degree programs to a deep-tech model emphasizing industry-academia collaboration.
Philanthropic Support
The school’s launch is supported by a philanthropic commitment from Dr. Jyoti Chatterjee (BTech 1977). He pledged up to USD 5 million over five years through the IIT KGP Foundation USA. An initial USD 1 million commitment was made upon signing the agreement. Further annual funding will bring the total to USD 5 million.
Innovation Accelerator Model
Unlike conventional AI departments, the new school functions as an innovation accelerator. It integrates digital engineering, next-generation computing, AI, and deep neural systems within a multidisciplinary ecosystem.
Sectoral Applications
In healthcare, the school will collaborate with the School of Medical Science and Technology (SMST) and the Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Super Speciality Hospital. This integration will facilitate real-world validation of AI systems, from prototypes to deployment.
Industry and Government Collaboration
The school will operate directly under the Dean (R&D). It plans to establish industry-hosted laboratories and AI testbeds. Co-development platforms with industry and government partners will also be created.
Director’s Statement
IIT Kharagpur Director Prof. Suman Chakraborty stated the school represents a structural change in institutionalizing applied AI. He described it as a research-driven architecture designed to advance innovations from code to clinic and research to national capability.
Prof. Chakraborty added that the school will be a convergence platform. Industry, academia, and government will collaborate to create AI solutions for India and the world. The school aims to position IIT Kharagpur as a leading institution for responsible and ethical AI development.
Goals and Vision
The school’s objectives include fostering indigenous AI capabilities. This will support India’s technological self-reliance mission in areas like healthcare, manufacturing, infrastructure, energy, and smart systems.
