IIT Kharagpur, BIT-Mesra Host Advanced Materials Conference

IIT Kharagpur and BIT-Mesra will jointly host an international conference on advanced materials and manufacturing. The ‘Frontiers in Surface Engineering & Additive Manufacturing’ ( FSEAM 2026 ) conference is scheduled for January 21-23, 2026 . It will take place at the Kalidas Auditorium, IIT-Kharagpur, West Bengal.

The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at IIT-Kharagpur and BIT-Mesra are organizing the event. Global professionals will participate. These experts focus on key areas: surface engineering, additive manufacturing, hybrid processing, and advanced materials.

Conference Focus Areas

FSEAM 2026 addresses cutting-edge developments in several fields. Surface engineering involves modifying material surfaces. This improves properties like wear resistance or corrosion protection. The technique extends the lifespan and performance of components across various industries.

Additive manufacturing , also known as 3D printing, builds objects layer by layer. It uses a digital design. This method allows for complex geometries and custom parts. It transforms product development and production in sectors like aerospace, medical, and automotive.

Hybrid processing combines multiple manufacturing methods. This achieves superior results. It merges benefits from different techniques, such as additive manufacturing with traditional machining. This creates materials with enhanced properties and complex structures.

The conference also highlights advanced materials . These include new alloys, ceramics, and composites. They possess unique characteristics. Such materials offer solutions for challenging engineering problems, ranging from lightweight structures to high-temperature applications.

Student Exposure and Practical Learning

The conference offers students direct engagement with industry experts. BIT Mesra Vice-Chancellor Prof Indranil Manna emphasized this benefit. He stated, “Students understand how theory translates into engineering decisions. They engage with experts working on wear, durability, process control, and sustainability.”

This interaction provides insight into real-world applications. Students learn about core functions within materials science and manufacturing. They gain perspective on how academic concepts apply to practical engineering challenges.

Global Collaboration and Advancement

FSEAM 2026 provides a global platform. It aims to present scientific advancements. The platform also facilitates technical discussions. The event fosters collaborations that bridge academic research with real-world industry applications.

The conference supports the exchange of ideas among researchers, academics, and industry professionals. It helps drive innovation in materials science and manufacturing technologies. This contributes to future advancements in these critical fields.
