IIT Delhi Names Hall After Flipkart Co-founder Binny Bansal

NEW DELHI – The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has announced it will name its Exhibition Hall the “Binny Bansal Exhibition Hall.” This decision recognizes alumnus Binny Bansal, co-founder of Flipkart, for his substantial contribution to the IIT Delhi Endowment Fund. His donation marks the largest-ever unrestricted individual gift received by the institute.

The Board for Educational and Research Planning (BERP) approved the naming proposal. This approval followed a recommendation from the institute’s naming committee. The Exhibition Hall, located on the ground floor of the New Delhi campus, serves multiple academic and institutional functions.

Significance of the Donation

Binny Bansal’s donation is classified as ” unrestricted .” This means IIT Delhi can deploy the funds flexibly across various priority areas. Such flexibility allows the institute to respond to emerging needs and strategic opportunities without specific donor mandates.

Funds directed to the IIT Delhi General Endowment support several key initiatives. These include student scholarships, providing financial aid to deserving students. They also offer seed funding for innovative research projects, fostering new discoveries and technological advancements.

The endowment further supports the development of innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems within the campus. This helps students and faculty translate ideas into startups and real-world solutions. Additionally, portions of the fund enhance campus infrastructure, improving facilities and learning environments.

IIT Delhi officials stated this contribution aims to empower the institute. It seeks to create an environment where faculty and students can pursue high-impact work. This work is expected to hold global relevance, contributing to broader scientific and societal progress.

Exhibition Hall’s Role and Recognition

The Binny Bansal Exhibition Hall is a central venue for academic activities. It regularly hosts academic showcases, displaying student achievements and research findings. The hall also facilitates student project presentations and innovation expos, highlighting new ideas and technologies.

Beyond student-focused events, the hall is used for various institutional gatherings. The naming aims to formally acknowledge significant alumni support. It also encourages other alumni and benefactors to contribute to IIT Delhi’s ongoing development and long-term vision.

Announcement in Singapore

The institute announced the naming at an alumni event held in Singapore. Key IIT Delhi representatives attended, including the Director, the Dean of Alumni Relations, and the CEO of the IIT Delhi Endowment Management Foundation. The event convened alumni, entrepreneurs, and donors.

Discussions at the Singapore gathering focused on IIT Delhi’s strategic priorities. These priorities include advancing research, enhancing student support, and driving institutional growth. Alumni contributions were a central theme, highlighting their critical role in the institute’s future.

Leadership’s Perspective

Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, emphasized the impact of Bansal’s gift. “Binny Bansal has set a new benchmark,” Banerjee stated. He added that the donation “inspired generations of alumni to give back towards the Institute’s growth and long-term vision.”

Banerjee further highlighted the benefits of supporting the General Endowment. He noted it “strengthens IIT Delhi’s ability to invest flexibly in priority areas.” These areas encompass research, student support, and innovation. Such support helps “build a more resilient and future-ready institution,” Banerjee concluded.

The Role of Alumni Philanthropy

IIT Delhi officials underscored the importance of alumni philanthropy. They stated it is vital for establishing a sustainable endowment fund. A robust endowment provides long-term financial stability. This stability enables consistent support for teaching excellence, cutting-edge research, and continuous innovation.

The institute believes strong alumni engagement and financial support are fundamental. They ensure IIT Delhi maintains its position as a leading educational and research institution. This commitment to alumni giving fosters a cycle of support, benefiting current and future generations of students and faculty.
