IIT Bombay MDes Admissions 2026: Apply by March 23

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has opened applications for its Master of Design (MDes) and MDes by Research programs. Prospective students can apply online until March 23, 2026 , through the official admission portals acad.iitb.ac.in and portal.iitb.ac.in.

Admissions Overview

IIT Bombay plans to admit 68 students to the MDes program. The MDes by Research program will accommodate 10 students for the academic year 2026-27. Applications submitted after the initial deadline but before 5 pm on March 26, 2026 , will incur a late fee of Rs 500 per stream.

Key Dates and Process

A written test for both MDes and MDes by Research programs is scheduled for May 8, 2026 , at the IDC School of Design. Interviews for MDes candidates will follow on May 9 and 10, 2026 . Admission results are expected to be released on the IIT Bombay website on June 1, 2026 .

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates applying for the MDes program must achieve at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in their qualifying degree. For Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disability (PwD) candidates, the minimum requirement is 50%. All applicants need a valid Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) score.

For the MDes by Research program, a minimum of 60% marks is required in the qualifying degree. SC/ST/PwD applicants need 55% marks. An exemption from the CEED score is granted to applicants holding a BDes, MDes, or MArch degree from an IIT with a minimum CGPA/CPI of 8.00 on a 0-10 scale.

Application Fees

Application fees vary by category. General and Other Backward Classes (OBC) male candidates will pay Rs 300. SC, ST, and PwD applicants will pay Rs 150. Female applicants across all categories will pay Rs 150. Third gender applicants will pay the same fee as male reserved and unreserved candidates.

Selection Procedure

Admission is based on a written test and an interview. The written test may include a material or studio assessment. Details regarding specific test components will be communicated to candidates called for the written test and interview.
