IIT Bombay Hostel: 5 Live Cartridges Found, Probe Launched

Five live 7.65 mm cartridges were found in an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay hostel room on Thursday . The discovery followed a late-night physical altercation between two students. Campus security intervened and subsequently found liquor bottles and the ammunition during a room inspection. No weapon was recovered.

Campus Security Notifies Police

IIT Bombay issued a statement confirming the incident. The institute clarified that the cartridges were brought to the campus by a visitor, identified as a childhood friend of the student residing in the hostel. The presence of the ammunition was only revealed after the scuffle drew security’s attention.

The institute’s Chief Security Officer (CSO) and their team conducted an internal investigation. The case was then handed over to the Powai Police. An FIR was registered, and the visitor was presented before a judge and placed in judicial custody. The students involved were questioned by police and later released. The matter remains under investigation by Powai Police.

Police Investigation Underway

Preliminary findings suggest the live cartridges originated from Bihar . Police are investigating the reason for their presence on campus. Investigators are exploring potential links to criminal conspiracies or larger illegal firearms supply networks.

Security measures on the IIT Powai campus have been enhanced. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are expected.
