Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) published its five-year Strategy Plan 2026-30 on December 8 . The plan aims to establish IIT Bombay as a leading global technology institute by 2030. It focuses on frontier research areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI), MedTech, and quantum technologies.
K Radhakrishnan, Chairperson of the IIT Bombay Board of Governors (BoG), officially released the plan. The BoG approved the strategy after extensive input from faculty, students, alumni, industry partners, and staff.
Core Strategic Themes
IIT Bombay’s 2030 strategy outlines three main themes. These themes aim to strengthen leadership in education, research, innovation, and societal impact. They focus on excellence across all operations.
Learner-Centric Education
The institute proposes a shift towards student-driven and experimental learning. This includes new joint degree programs with global partners. IIT Bombay will also expand digital education, offering online degree and certificate programs to reach a global audience.
Frontier Research Leadership
IIT Bombay will prioritize specific research domains. These include AI, Machine Learning (ML), climate technologies, healthcare, MedTech, and quantum technologies. Other focus areas are semiconductor research, advanced materials, space, and defense. Interdisciplinary centers and strategic faculty recruitment will support these efforts.
Industry and Society Relevant Research & Translation
This theme emphasizes translating research into practical solutions. It aims to increase industry collaborations. The plan also strengthens the startup ecosystem. This acceleration will bring research findings to market-ready and societal applications.

Six key enablers support the five-year strategy. These elements ensure the effective implementation of the plan’s goals:
