IIT Bhubaneswar has developed an advanced digital power substation. This system features a centralized monitoring and protection mechanism. Energy Department Additional Chief Secretary Vishal Kumar Dev inaugurated the system on Tuesday. The inauguration occurred at the 33/11 kV campus substation. IIT-Bhubaneswar Director Shreepad Karmalkar was also present.
Digital Substation Features
The new system provides real-time monitoring. It also offers protection for the institute’s complete electrical distribution network. This project was a demonstration initiative. It falls under the National Perspective Plan (NPP) of the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bengaluru.
Project Goals
The project’s main objective was clear. It aimed to design, develop, and demonstrate a centralized protection and monitoring (CPM) system. This system is for a distribution substation. It includes integrating distributed energy resources.
Indigenous Development
This digital substation represents a significant indigenous development. It is one of the first such frameworks in India. The system utilizes intelligent merging units. These units remove the need for traditional physical Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) within the substation.
