The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad launched its first international campus in Dubai in September 2025 . The new campus currently offers a one-year MBA program and two specialized centers. Dean Sunil Sharma stated the Dubai campus acts as a “brand ambassador” for India’s education system in the UAE.
Campus Development and Vision
The Dubai campus emerged from a joint vision between the Indian and Dubai governments, initially conceived in 2023. Discussions for the project began in early 2024, leading to the campus becoming operational by September 2025. Dean Sharma confirmed that IIM Ahmedabad-Dubai maintains the same academic rigor and quality standards as the Ahmedabad campus. The institution functions as a single entity with two distinct branches.
The Dubai government provided substantial support for the campus establishment, including a three-floor transit campus located in Dubai International Academic City. A full-fledged permanent campus is planned within the next three to four years.
Program Offerings and Structure
The campus commenced operations with a one-year full-time MBA program, enrolling 35 students in its inaugural batch. Admission to the program requires a minimum of four years of work experience. Consistent with IIM Ahmedabad’s programs, the MBA degree does not offer specializations, focusing instead on developing “generalist” leaders.
The curriculum directly mirrors that of the Ahmedabad campus. It includes core courses in functional areas like HR, strategy, and marketing. The program also features an international immersion component and a separate immersion program at the Ahmedabad campus. The academic year in Dubai runs from September to August, aligning with global business school calendars.
Launch Process and Support
Dean Sharma reported no significant challenges during the rapid campus launch. The speed of approvals, program design, and facility setup was described as “unprecedented.” This included swift accreditation from local UAE regulatory bodies and identification of the campus location. Support from IIM Ahmedabad alumni and local Dubai entities also facilitated the launch.
Integrating Identity and Culture
The campus architecture incorporates design elements, such as red-painted walls, echoing the iconic IIM Ahmedabad campus. This aims to reflect the values of the Indian education system, including sincerity and educational priority. The campus plans to integrate local culture by inviting UAE leaders for guest lectures and developing executive education programs with local organizations.
Research and Entrepreneurship Centers
IIM Ahmedabad-Dubai houses a Center for Entrepreneurship, operating through IIMA Ventures, and a Center for Case Study Development. The entrepreneurship center aims to bridge Indian startups with the UAE’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, fostering market opportunities and investments. It will also offer courses and workshops for students and external participants.
The case study center focuses on documenting operations of local companies and cultural sensitivities within Dubai and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. This initiative aims to build contextual intelligence among students and disseminate regional business insights through case studies and workshops.
Student Demographics and Fees
The inaugural cohort comprises 35 Indian students, including some residing in the UAE and the US. Future cohorts aim for increased international diversity. The fee for the one-year MBA program is USD 80,000 . The selection process requires GMAT or GRE scores, followed by an interview. Scholarships ranging from 15-20% are available based on financial need.
Faculty and Future Outlook
Most faculty members fly from the Ahmedabad campus for teaching sessions; four faculty members have permanently relocated to Dubai. All future faculty hires will teach at both the Ahmedabad and Dubai campuses. Discussions are underway regarding new programs, but the immediate focus remains on consolidating existing operations and enhancing student experience. The campus features digitally equipped classrooms, seminar halls, and open spaces for student interaction, along with a library.
Marketing Strategy
IIM Ahmedabad leverages its established global brand reputation for the Dubai campus, reducing the need for traditional marketing. The institution plans to build local reputation through consulting and executive education services for organizations in the region. The focus remains on organic growth and the quality of education provided.
