GMRIT Becomes Deemed-to-be University, Plans Expansion

The GMR Institute of Technology (GMRIT) in Rajam, Andhra Pradesh, has officially been granted deemed-to-be university status. The Ministry of Education announced the decision, effective under the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act.

Established in 1997 by the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, GMRIT has operated with autonomous status since 2012. This new designation marks a significant step for the institute’s planned academic and institutional growth.

Expansion and New Programs

The institute has secured NAAC accreditation across three cycles and NBA accreditation for all eligible programs. GMRIT was also recognized in the Times Higher Education Rankings 2026.

The institution maintains industry partnerships. Mandatory internships are a component of student learning. GMRIT reports consistent placement records in sectors including IT, manufacturing, infrastructure, energy, and consulting.

Future Initiatives

GMRIT’s 130-acre campus is positioned for expansion. The proximity to the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport is expected to facilitate national and international academic collaborations.

Ashwini Saxena, CEO of GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, stated that the deemed-to-be university status grants GMRIT strategic autonomy. This will allow for the introduction of multidisciplinary programs, enhanced research and innovation, and strengthened global partnerships.

As part of its expansion, GMRIT intends to introduce programs in multidisciplinary sciences. These will include applied research areas and medical and allied health sciences.

National Context

Andhra Pradesh now has eight deemed-to-be universities, including GMRIT. As of August 2025, India recognized 146 deemed-to-be universities. The total number of universities nationwide stands at 1,338.
